Oggi è la giornata delle malattie rare

29. Februar 2024

29. February 2024

Ever heard of EoE, PBC or PSC? All three are rare diseases. All three are often overlooked. That’s why we are supporting today’s Rare Disease Day to help raise awareness for such illnesses.

EoE, PBC and PSC in brief:

  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the esophagus leading to swallowing difficulties, pain whilst eating, heartburn and food getting stuck in the esophagus. Patients very often withdraw from social life and lose substantial quality of life.
  • Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the small bile ducts are damaged by inflammation. Without adequate treatment, this inflammation may eventually spread to the tissue of the liver and even cause liver cirrhosis.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease that is characterized by inflammatory scarring of the bile ducts, progressively blocking them. This leads to cirrhosis of the liver and increases the risk of bile duct cancer. Patients are often younger than 40 years old.
